Pay It Forward at Farmers’ Fare in Rockport

10172009061

Farmers’ Fare just opened in the neighboring town of Rockport. In the open letter greeting visitors on their site, they welcome us, “We at Farmers Fare want to bring a contemporary interpretation to traditions that have always enriched our lives. We will host Sunday suppers, pig roasts, pumpkin carvings and other fun events. We pledge to provide a welcoming atmosphere, and scrumptious local food and products of highest quality. We will provide rooms for lectures and informal meetings about food, cooking, and growing healthy crops.” We visited one afternoon last week to check it out. One open large space serves as a market and a cafe. One of the walls has been painted with chalk paint, where many a recent visitor has left his mark.

Along the southern wall of the room stand coolers stocked with drinks and meats. The last one in line says, “Pay It Forward”. Hmm? What a wonderful idea! One can help themselves to a sweet frozen treat and, optionally, leave a dollar – “feed the cow”. Or put a buck in now and pick up your treat another time. Treats come in a variety of flavors including lemon, multi-berry and one labeled “???” – mystery flavor! Yum!

Stop by and visit our new neighbors, on Route 90, within a half mile of its northern intersection with Route 1 in Rockport.

Edge Recipe: Warmed Asparagus & Spring Mushroom Salad

This spring Chef Bryan Dame teamed up with Lincolnville’s own Cellardoor Winery to offer an early evening cooking class on Sunday, April 26 from 4 -7pm. Guests learned to prepare, present and pair a fabulous dinner with Bryan at the vineyard. Guests took part in this han’s on class, from preparing and plating the menu to dining on four courses featuring local ingredients paired with Cellardoor wines. We were thrilled to hear that the class sold out quickly and even had waiting lists. For those who were unable to attend the class, Chef Dame wanted to share a delightful dish for spring that he presented to the class.

Warmed Asparagus & Spring Mushroom Salad

Dressing

4 – Egg Yolks

4tsp Lemon Juice

1 tsp Soy Sauce

2 Tbsp + 1 tsp Clarified Butter

Blend all ingredients together to emulsify

Bread Crumbs

1 Stick of Unsalted Butter, melted

2 Cups Panko Bread Crumbs (Japanese bread crumbs)

3 Tbsp Parsley, chopped

Mix melted butter, bread crumb and parsley together

Warmed Vegetables

1 Lb Asparagus, blanched, stalks whole or cut in half

1 Small Red Onion, julienne

2 Cups Assorted Spring Mushrooms, sautéed in butter and seasoned with salt & pepper

8 Slices Cooked Crispy Bacon, chopped or whole slices for garnish

Mâche, Tender Tiny Lettuce Leaves or Italian Parsley Leaves for garnish

To Prepare

Combined bread crumb mixture, asparagus, onion and mushrooms in a large casserole dish and bake at 450°f until nicely browned and slightly crisp.

Divide roasted vegetables and bread crumbs onto four plates and drizzle dressing over salad , garnish each plate with bacon and greens, season with sprinkle of sea salt and fresh ground black pepper.

For Chef Dame’s class hosted at Cellardoor Winery, Winemaker Aaron Peet selected a chilled white wine to be served with this warm salad.

Cellardoor Winery’s Perfect Stranger: Made from the Cayuga white grape, this wine has aromas of beach roses with flavors of juicy pears and a finish that is both spicy and sweet. Perfect Stranger is available at The Villa on Route One now open 11-6 and at The Winery on Youngtown Road, 10 -5. Both locations tasting rooms are open 7 days a week.

Enjoy!

The Edge Oceanfront Dining included in Portland Monthly Magazine

Boat_cropped

I just received the latest copy of Portland Magazine (Maine's Award Winning Magazine!),
and found that The Inn at Ocean's Edge was included in in the "Local Flavor" section of
the April 2009 Issue.  In an article called "Waiter, Can You Bring Me a
View?", Allison Richards profiles over a dozen local "hotels offering
five-star cuisine and drop-dead beautiful views".  The article begins:
"The wonderful thing about Maine's ocean and lakeside hotel restaurants
with wrap around views is, beyond the steaming hot-boiled lobster, the
sweet ears of butter-sugar corn, the strawberry shortcake – or say, at
[petite] dejuener, blueberry muffins true as a morning in July, we are
able to feast our eyes.  That is, the view is the floor show."

Here's
what they say about The Edge Oceanfront Dining, our 4-Diamond restaurant: "… 180 degree viewLobster super close up
treats diners to the full expanse of West Penobscot Bat. Looking up to the bay to the east, we showcase the ferry and ferry terminal of Isleboro, Seven Hundred Acre Island, and, of course, the length of Isleboro itself… Local Lincolnville lobster boats pull traps off the beach by day, and the Maine Windjammer Fleet sails by each evening, snuggling into Dark Harbor. Heighten the experience with Fire Roasted Lobster brushed with olive oil, sprinkled with sea salt and roasted in our wood-fired over, followed by Flourless Chocolate Cake S'mores."

It was nice that our sister properties, The Black Point Inn, and Migis Lodge were also included in the article.  We hope you'll join us at the Edge, or one of the properties, for a meal with a view!

Historic Inns of Rockland Chocolate March

Chocolate

Herald Gazette, (formerly VillageSoup) our local paper, reports this morning on the "Historic Inns of Rockland Chocolate March" which took place over the weekend:

"Beyond the yummy chocolate delights provided at the Berry Manor Inn,
the Captain Lindsey House Inn, the Granite Inn and the Limerock Inn,
were chocolate demonstrations held throughout the downtown and in
waterfront eateries. The demonstrations ranged from how to make
chocolate candies, chocolate ganache, Irish cream tarts, whoopie pies
and chocolate canolis, to a chocolate Reuben tasting and a hot
chocolate massage."

Mmmm… Bring it on! Too bad The Edge couldn't participate because we're in Lincolnville. Bryan makes a pretty memorable flourless chocolate cake.
